＞用法は年々変化し、国によっても異なる。例えば、ある文脈では精神遅滞はその分野全体を指すが、以前はより軽度の障害を持つ人々に適用されていた。「Feeble-minded」は、イギリスでは軽度の知的障害を意味し、アメリカではかつて知的障害全体に適用されていた。「境界性知的機能」は現在定義されていないが、IQ70台の人に適用される言葉として使われることがある。IQ70～85の人々は、かつてアメリカの公教育制度において、知的障害を理由に特別な配慮を受ける資格があった[要出典]。
